Notifications, digests and push
What the email digest contains and when it arrives, how push notifications work on each device, and quiet hours.
In short: one calm digest email a week by default, push only about things that concern you, and both can be changed or switched off in your notification settings.
Where to change everything
The settings page has a row for each type of notification and a switch for each channel: on the site, by email and as push. Changes save as you switch them.
The email digest
The digest collects what you missed into one email. It has up to three parts, and an empty part is left out:
- Replies to you — up to 5 new replies, comments on your publications, mentions and answers marked as helpful that you haven't read yet.
- In your communities — up to 5 of the most useful new publications in communities you joined or follow.
- Questions you could answer — up to 3 questions from the last 14 days in those communities that nobody has answered yet.
Titles come in your reading language when a translation exists. Otherwise you see the original title with a note about its language. The email itself is in your interface language.
How often and when
Choose Weekly (the default), Daily or Never. The digest arrives around 8:00 in your time zone; the weekly one comes on Monday. Set the time zone on the same settings page; until you do, we use UTC.
We don't send a digest when:
- nothing new has appeared since the last one;
- you were on the site recently: in the last 24 hours for the daily digest, or the last 72 hours for the weekly one. You have probably seen it all already.
You never get two digests for the same day or week, even if our server has to retry a send.
Unsubscribe in one click
Every digest has an Unsubscribe link at the bottom. It works without signing in and switches the digest to Never at once. If your mail app shows its own "Unsubscribe" button, it uses the same link.
The digest has no tracking pixels, so we don't know whether you opened it. We only count clicks on its links as a daily total, never per person.
Push notifications
Push notifications appear on your phone or computer even when Muhamor is closed. A push shows only the line you see in your notifications, for example "Anna replied to your comment in …". It never contains the text of a comment or a message.
- We offer push only after you publish or comment, never as soon as a page opens. You can also turn it on in your notification settings.
- Push is set up per device. Turn it on in each browser where you want it. Turning it off on one device doesn't touch the others.
- By default push comes for replies, comments on your publications, mentions, answers marked as helpful and moderation decisions. New publications in your communities and editors' picks stay off until you turn them on.
- You get at most 10 push notifications an hour. Anything beyond that waits in your notifications on the site.
- iPhone and iPad: push works only in the installed app. Add Muhamor to the Home Screen first, open it from there, then turn push on.
Turning push off
- For one type: switch it off in the Push column of your notification settings.
- For this device: press Turn off in the push block of the same page. Signing out of Muhamor in this browser turns push off on this device too, so a shared computer doesn't show your notifications to the next person.
- In the browser: block notifications for the site in the browser's site settings. To turn them back on, allow them there and reload the page.
Quiet hours
No push arrives during quiet hours. They are on by default from 22:00 to 08:00 in your time zone. You can change the hours or switch them off. Nothing is lost: everything stays in your notifications on the site and can appear in your next digest.
