How do you deal with light pollution as a city stargazer?

From my backyard I can see maybe a few dozen stars on a good night. The streetlight two houses down doesn’t help.

I’ve started driving out of town once a month, and the difference is unreal: the Milky Way just appears. For those of you in cities, do you have a spot nearby that’s dark enough, or have you made peace with planets and the Moon?

Backyard stargazer with a small telescope and too many star charts.

  1. Your monthly drive sounds like the best move already. In the city itself, a few things that help me are: letting my eyes adapt for 20 minutes without looking at a phone, using a simple light-pollution map to find the darkest park or hill nearby, and picking targets that cut through the glow, like the Moon, bright planets, and double stars. A hood or a hand held up to block the nearest streetlight can also make a surprising difference. Do you have a spot within walking distance that is even a little darker than your backyard?

  2. Na cidade fotografo exatamente essas luzes de rua que te atrapalham 😅 Mas sair da cidade uma vez por mês parece-me ótima ideia

  3. Ha, one person’s problem is another’s subject! The drive out is half the fun anyway
